What is DFM, actually?
DFM (Design for Manufacturing) is the systematic check of a PCB layout for manufacturing readiness before the first board is built. At its core: can a real SMT line manufacture this layout economically, reproducibly and without quality risk?
The DFM report is not a circuit audit. It checks no function, no EMC, no safety. It checks only manufacturability: pad geometries, component clearances, solder mask, panelisation, vias, edge distances, assembly order.
Typical DFM findings
In about 70% of all prototypes SMTEC sees for the first time, the DFM check finds at least one critical point. The most common:
- Pad geometry too small or asymmetric: Solder joints become brittle or components tip up during reflow (tombstoning on small 0402/0201).
- Solder mask too tight: Solder Mask Defined where Non-Solder Mask Defined would solve the problem.
- Components too close to the edge: Usually not a problem during assembly (the panel border carries the transport) — but more expensive at depaneling, as nearby components make clean singulation from the panel harder.
- Polarity markings missing or under components: Cannot be inspected at final visual check.
- Vias in pads: Wick solder away and cause cold joints. Solution: via-in-pad with filling or tenting.
- Missing fiducials: Without at least 3 global fiducials the machine cannot position the board precisely.
- Bad panelisation: Too narrow V-cuts, missing breakaway tabs, wrong orientation relative to machine flow.
- BGA pads too small for X-ray inspection: Relevant for safety-critical assemblies.
None of these findings makes a layout unusable on its own — but each increases the failure rate at scale. Caught in prototyping they cost little. Caught in series they typically cost 10x more.
Why DFM does not run automatically at SMTEC
Many providers advertise "automatic DFM check on upload". That sounds good but is misleading. What actually runs is a rule validator against standard values: "pad < 0.15 mm? Warning. Component too close to edge? Warning." That is not DFM — that is a linter.
A real DFM check needs context: which components are critical for the function? Which tolerances cannot the customer accept? Which solder profile is right for the material choice? An algorithm cannot answer these — you need a human who knows the machine.

What a SMTEC DFM report contains
- Findings list with categories (critical, recommended, cosmetic)
- Annotated layouts with marked problem spots
- Recommended corrections in customer-form (workable in the layout tool)
- Panelisation proposal: if no panel template exists yet, SMTEC usually creates it
- Placement notes: critical, large or heavy components ideally on one side (the second assembly side)
By default the DFM report is created after manufacturing, as a delivery enclosure. If you need it beforehand (with the option to update the layout before the board is built), contact SMTEC in advance.
When is DFM worth it?
- First prototype of a new circuit: Almost always recommended.
- Layout change from old revision to new: Recommended to avoid regressions.
- BGA/QFN/fine-pitch in the design: Highly recommended — these components are unforgiving.
- First build in ISO 13485 context: Required for documentation.
- Pure SMD board, already manufactured multiple times: Not strictly needed.
Rule of thumb: if you plan to scale to higher quantities, run DFM at the latest in the second prototype cycle. Otherwise the same issues are produced x 1,000 later.
DFM vs. DFA vs. DFT
Three related terms that often get mixed up:
- DFM (Design for Manufacturing): Check of SMT-line manufacturability. Pads, clearances, panelisation.
- DFA (Design for Assembly): Check of mechanical final assembly (box-build). Screw access, connector orientation.
- DFT (Design for Test): Check of testability. Test points, ICT access, boundary-scan chain.
